Jim Ananich vs. Robert Daunt: 6 things to know about Tuesday's special election winners

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The results are in from Tuesday's special primary election for the 27th Senate District seat. And Democrat Jim Ananich will face Republican Robert Daunt in the May 7 general election.

The special primary election was called because former state Sen. John Gleason, D-Flushing, won election in November to be Genesee County clerk/register. Under state law, the governor called a special election replace him. The new senator will serve out the remainder of Gleason's term, through 2014.

It was a low-key race that drew less than ten percent of local voters.

Jim Ananich

  • Ananich is a former Flint school teacher and city council member.
  • Ananich said “public safety is extremely important and getting things done is what people want from their elected officials” as well as bringing more jobs into the community.
  • Ananich, first ran for state representative in 2004, but lost to former 49th District state Rep. Lee Gonzales.

Robert Daunt

  • Daunt is a Flint real estate professional.
  • Daunt said public safety and jobs are important, along with educational improvement and work on deteriorating roads.
  • Daunt lost to Ananich in November 2012 in the race for 47th House District seat.
